Stephen Vitiello is an Electronic musician and sound artist who transforms incidental atmospheric noises into soundscapes that alter our perception of the surrounding environment. He translates listening experiences and responds to different things; he has been doing soundtracks with these experiments and responses for ten years. Stephen also does installation and media art. He has composed music for independent films, experimental video projects and art installations, collaborating with such artists as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler and Dara Birnbaum. In 1999 he was awarded a studio for six months on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower One, where he recorded the cracking noises of the building swaying under the stress of the winds after Hurricane Floyd. As an installation artist, he is particularly interested in the physical aspect of sound and its potential to define the form and atmosphere of a spatial environment. When doing or creating an installation, he considers himself both a sound artist and performer. Stephen collaborated with julie mehretu; they created an installation where she would respond to his track by drawing on the wall and he would respond with music to what she drew. He also did a pretty large installation piece where he crossed ten speakers that produced these bird/nature sounds and it would attract birds. theres another where he collected bell sounds all over new york and the united kingdom and made a composition based on it. It was called the "Bell of Hope", recorded over 100 bells and edited it down to 59 bells. Stephen also built structures and recorded sounds around it and played it back in the structure-texas.
